One platform – many architecture decisions

Microsoft Fabric brings data integration, data engineering, warehousing, real-time analytics and Power BI together on one SaaS platform, with OneLake as the shared data store. That simplifies a lot, but it moves key questions to the front: How should workspaces be structured? Who may do what? How is shared capacity governed? And how does existing data get onto the platform without copying everything?

We answer these questions before they become expensive – with an architecture that treats governance, security and cost as design inputs from the start.

1. Microsoft Fabric assessment

We assess data sources, existing platforms, licensing and requirements, and prioritize use cases by value – such as time-to-insight and data trust. The result: a clear decision on whether and how Fabric fits, and a rollout plan from discovery through pilot to production.

2. Target architecture

Workspace taxonomy and naming standards, domains and ownership, separate dev/test/prod environments, a role and permission model and your network posture – documented as a reference architecture that grows with your organization.

3. OneLake, Lakehouse & Warehouse

We define your bronze/silver/gold pattern (medallion architecture), document lakehouse and warehouse decisions per use case, and use OneLake shortcuts to unify data across domains and clouds without copying it. Where needed, we add a real-time lane with Eventstreams.

4. Power BI

Certified datasets and consistent measures instead of report sprawl. We connect Power BI cleanly to lakehouse and warehouse and clarify which licenses creators and consumers need in the Fabric model.

5. Purview & data governance

Microsoft Purview integration for lineage, classification and discoverability, mandatory sensitivity labels for curated gold data and clear ownership of data products – so data is discoverable, trusted and compliant.

6. Security

Secure by default without slowing teams down: least-privilege permissions through workspace roles and Entra ID, a OneLake security strategy and – where required – private links and outbound rules. For regulated organizations we align the platform with GDPR, BSI C5 and NIS2.

7. Capacity & FinOps

Fabric capacity is shared. Without guardrails, noisy-neighbor problems and unexpected costs appear quickly. We size capacity SKUs, set up scaling, pausing, scheduling and workload prioritization, and establish usage monitoring with cost allocation per team or tenant.

8. CI/CD

Separate dev/test/prod workspaces, version control and defined release processes that follow your organizational standard – so changes to pipelines, models and reports reach production in a traceable, repeatable way.

9. Migration

Step by step instead of big bang: we first connect existing data sources through shortcuts, then move workloads from your current platform. Every step is checked against acceptance criteria agreed up front.

10. Implementation
