Encryption Key Management: Your Keys, Your Data, Your Control

What Weak Key Management Costs You

Whoever controls the keys controls the data. Weak or scattered key management exposes you to cyberattacks, insider misuse and fines.
You get end-to-end encryption for data in use, in transit and at rest, with central control of every key across cloud and hybrid environments. Compliance gets simpler, human error drops, and you keep full visibility.

How You Get Control in Five Steps

Discover

Know where your keys and risks are: data landscape, security gaps, compliance and governance requirements.

Design

A blueprint that fits your business: encryption architecture, key hierarchies and access policies.

Build

No more manual key handling: automated generation, rotation and encryption across hybrid and multi-cloud environments.

Validate

Proof it works before go-live: performance, policy enforcement, scalability and compliance readiness tested.

Decide

A clear basis for decisions: measured risk reduction and efficiency, plus a roadmap for company-wide encryption governance.

What You Get, Layer by Layer

Strategy: The Right Key Model for Your Data

  • Protect what matters most: encryption matched to data sensitivity, compliance and business goals.
  • One control point for all keys: centralized key management across cloud, hybrid and on-prem.
  • Works with what you have: your identity, access and governance frameworks.
  • You choose who holds the keys: BYOK, HYOK or HSM-backed custody, aligned with cloud KMS such as Azure Key Vault, AWS KMS and GCP Cloud KMS.

What Changes for You

  • Data you can trust: end-to-end protection keeps data confidential and untampered.
  • Less risk: automated lifecycle management cuts human error and insider threats.
  • Faster audits: built-in audit trails shrink regulatory reporting effort.
  • Lower IT workload: unified automation removes complexity and manual steps.
  • Investment that lasts: scalable architecture ready for cloud, hybrid and post-quantum environments.

Why Trust Insight42 With Your Keys?

  • Trusted by regulated industries: Proven performance in environments where data sovereignty and compliance are critical.
  • Automation-first architecture: strong encryption your team does not have to babysit.
  • End-to-end visibility: every encryption key, in every environment, in one view.
  • Compliance status in real time: key vaulting, policy automation and live compliance tracking.

BYOK, HYOK and HSM: what the terms mean

Cloud providers encrypt data at rest by default. The real question is who controls the keys. Three models dominate:

  • BYOK (Bring Your Own Key): You generate or import the key yourself, but it is stored and used in the provider’s key management service, such as Azure Key Vault, Google Cloud KMS or AWS KMS. You control rotation and revocation; the provider’s service performs the cryptographic operations.
  • HYOK (Hold Your Own Key): The key stays outside the cloud provider in a key manager or HSM that you operate. The cloud requests each cryptographic operation from it – for example via Google Cloud External Key Manager or the AWS KMS External Key Store. In Microsoft 365, Double Key Encryption follows a comparable approach.
  • HSM (Hardware Security Module): Tamper-resistant hardware that generates and protects keys. Cloud options include Azure Key Vault Managed HSM, Google Cloud HSM and AWS CloudHSM, typically validated to FIPS 140 Level 3.

Which model fits your data?

  • BYOK suits most workloads: clear ownership of keys with little operational overhead.
  • HYOK fits highly sensitive or regulated data when keys must remain outside the provider’s reach – at the price of latency and a hard dependency on your own key service.
  • Dedicated HSMs are the choice when regulation or internal policy requires hardware-backed keys under your exclusive control.

Frequently asked questions about encryption key management

Is BYOK enough for GDPR?

The GDPR does not prescribe a specific key model. Encryption is one of the measures named in Article 32. BYOK strengthens your control; when data may be accessed from third countries, keys held outside the provider (HYOK) can serve as a supplementary safeguard.

What happens if we lose a key?

Data encrypted with it can no longer be recovered. That is why backups, soft-delete and purge protection, and dual control are an integral part of key management.

Does HYOK slow down applications?

Every cryptographic operation calls your external key service, so its latency and availability directly affect your workloads. A highly available setup is therefore mandatory.

Do you support multiple clouds?

Yes. We design key management for Azure, Google Cloud and AWS, including multi-cloud setups with a consistent key strategy.

Why Insight42

  • Pass audits with less effort: architectures aligned with BSI C5, NIS2 and GDPR from day one, for enterprises and public-sector organizations in Germany and Europe.
  • One accountable team: assessment, architecture, implementation and operations from one source. No hand-offs, no finger-pointing, less coordination for you. Founded and led by Martin-Peter Lambert in Ingolstadt.
  • Results that run in production: we build and run our own products (Secretary42, Unimatrix-OI, InheritanceVault) and bring the same discipline to your project.
  • You stay in control: data residency, key custody (BYOK/HYOK) and a documented exit strategy are built in from day one, not bolted on later.
